How to Use Fist of Five

1

Ask a Question

The facilitator poses a yes/no or agreement question to the group. Anyone in the session can see the question in real time.

2

Vote 1–5

Everyone votes privately (1 = strongly disagree, 5 = fully agree). Votes are hidden until the facilitator reveals them.

3

Check Consensus

If all votes fall within ±1 of each other, consensus is reached. Otherwise, discuss the outliers and re-vote if needed.

4

New Question

Save the result to session history and move on to the next question. The full history is available for review throughout the session.

Why Fist of Five?

Instant Consensus Check

Instead of lengthy debates, get a quick pulse. If everyone shows 4 or 5, you have agreement. If someone shows 1, you know exactly who needs to be heard.

Inclusive Decision-Making

Silent voices get equal weight. Introverts who might not speak up in discussion can express their opinion through a simple number.

Faster Meetings

Replace 'does anyone object?' silence with a clear signal. Five seconds to vote beats five minutes of awkward waiting.
